Inspiration for Generations
Since she set her first flight record in 1922 by climbing higher than any woman ever had, Amelia Earhart demonstrated to millions — especially millions of young women — that anything is possible. In addition to her brilliant career in aviation, Earhart did much more, as an activist, humanitarian and philanthropist. Here in Atchison, you can see her legacy up close and personal — from her childhood exploits to her part in forming the International 99s, an organization of women pilots that continues her mission today.
Each year the Atchison community honors those who carry on Amelia’s spirit with the Amelia Earhart Pioneering Achievement Award. The award recipient is featured in a speakers’ symposium and will also speak at the Pioneering Achievement Award Luncheon, during which the award is presented.
The list of past honorees includes women from all walks of life: Pilots, politicians, authors, humanitarians and others. This year, the award will be presented to Amelia Rose Earhart, a distant relative of the famed aviatrix, whose ultimate goal is to fly around the world, recreating and symbolically completing the flight that her famous relative never got to finish in 1937. Amelia Rose is currently an NBC reporter in Denver and has started the Fly With Amelia Foundation to help provide flight scholarships for high school-aged girls and educational opportunities for people of all ages.
