.: Inspiration for Generations

Since she set her first flight record in 1922 by climbing higher than any woman ever had, Amelia Earhart demonstrated to millions — especially millions of young women — that anything is possible. In addition to her brilliant career in aviation, Earhart did much more, as an activist, humanitarian and philanthropist. Here in Atchison, you can see her legacy up close and personal — from her childhood exploits to her part in forming the International 99s, an organization of women pilots that continues her mission today.

Each year the Atchison community honors those who carry on Amelia's spirit with the Amelia Earhart Pioneering Achievement Award. The award recipient is featured in a speakers' symposium and will also speak at the Pioneering Achievement Award Luncheon, during which the award is presented.

The list of past honorees includes women from all walks of life: Pilots, politicians, authors, humanitarians and others. This year, the award will be presented to Lara Moritz, a respected news anchor with KMBC 9 News in Kansas City. Moritz is one of the most recognizable women in the Kansas City area. She knows the people of Knasas City — and they know her. Her list of interviews includes a one-on-one with President Obama, but it's not just about big names for Moritz. "The people I meet while covering stories help me grow as a human being," she says. "Some stories are humbling, some stories inspiring, every single story valuable."
