.: Inspiration for Generations

Since she set her first flight record in 1922 by climbing higher than any woman ever had, Amelia Earhart demonstrated to millions — especially millions of young women — that anything is possible. In addition to her brilliant career in aviation, Earhart did much more, as an activist, humanitarian and philanthropist. Here in Atchison, you can see her legacy up close and personal — from her childhood exploits to her part in forming the International 99s, an organization of women pilots that continues her mission today.

Each year the Atchison community honors those who carry on Amelia's spirit with the Amelia Earhart Pioneering Achievement Award. The award recipient is featured in a speakers' symposium and will also speak at the Pioneering Achievement Award Luncheon, during which the award is presented.

The list of past honorees includes women from all walks of life: Pilots, politicians, authors, humanitarians and others. This year, the award will be presented to Lynette Woodward, a pioneer on the basketball court, who paved the way for the success of women's basketball at the collegiate and professional levels.
