The Kanza Film Festival began in 2007 with the goal to bring a quality venue for aspiring filmmakers to get their films shown, find new outlets for the best films and help inspire and promote movie-making as an outlet, an educational pursuit, and a career path for those so inclined. In its first two years films from as far away as California, Indiana, Louisiana, South Dakota and Canada along with entries from Kansas and Missouri, have competed for top honors and over $2,000 in prizes have been awarded to help further the careers of promising filmmakers. Last year, Atchison native, Kevin Pickman won a second prize in the short fiction category and captured the People's Choice Award. The Kanza Film Festival has been organized in its first two years by The Atchison County Historical Society, Theatre Atchison and Pike Video Productions. The idea to begin the festival came when the former KAN Film Festival, based in Lawrence, ceased what was at the time the only Kansas based film festival. The Kanza Film Festival, through a grant from the Kansas Arts Commission, is in the process of becoming a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization to better serve the film community of the Midwest and beyond.
