a population just under 11,000, Atchison offers the qualities

Location
Atchison is picturesquely situated
on hills and bluffs beside the Missouri River in the northeast
corner of Kansas. The metropolitan areas of Kansas City, Topeka

Since its days as a major supplier to the West, Atchison
has maintained a healthy business climate. Shoppers from

is centered around a beautifully-landscaped outdoor pedestrian
plaza where an increasing number of specialty shops is attracting

Atchison’s early leaders left today’s residents
with an impressive legacy – scores of grand Victorian
homes that line tree-shaded brick streets.
Many of the city’s beautiful historic residences are
near the river, where homes date back to the 1860s and
range from $70,000 to over $300,000. Many homes in this
neighborhood are on the National Register of Historic Places.
Newer homes are mainly on the north and
west edges of town. More upscale and executive-style homes are
being built in subdivisions around the golf course at Bellevue
Country Club.
Home-buyers in the market for new homes
will find attractive options in subdivisions such as Brookdale
Estates, which has large lots with golf course and lake views,
and September Hills Country Estates, a wooded housing division
three miles south on U.S. Highway 73. One of the city’s newest developments
is Park Place, which features townhomes offering limited maintenance
for busy professionals or retired persons. Heritage Hills on Highway 7 North continues to be a popular area for
mid-range family homes, quality apartments, and duplexes. New homes are normally under construction in this area.
