Atchison County has a workforce of 8,840 people. Over 1,600 people living in surrounding areas commute to work in Atchison County every day.

As a trade center for a large rural region in Northeast Kansas and parts of Missouri, Atchison has many agricultural-based industries. Grain storage, milling and merchandising are handled by numerous Atchison businesses. Atchison ranks fifth in the state in grain storage with a 30-million bushel capacity.

Other Atchison industries manufacture a wide diversity of products including electronic moisture testing devices, stone monuments, spun concrete poles, steel pipe and casing, metal stampings, magnesium castings, rail anchors, leather and textile products.

Other major employers include Benedictine College, Atchison Hospital, Atchison Juvenile Correctional Facility, USD 409, and City and County governments.
