For a
small town, Atchison offers a surprising amount of entertainment – from community theatre,
concerts and art functions to sports and recreation. Many of
the leisure activities enjoyed by residents throughout the year
also attract thousands of visitors to Atchison each year. The
city’s quaint, small-town charm, rich historical legacy
and its unique downtown shopping district are increasingly drawing
travelers from across the country and around the world.
Dozens of volunteers, both on stage and
behind the scenes, present a year-round season of four plays
and a musical at
Theatre Atchison. In June and July, a summer theatre camp
gives youth the chance to participate in “Summerstage.”
For the art-minded, the Muchnic Art Gallery
offers monthly displays of art by regional and national artists
in a spectacular Queen Anne-style mansion. It is administered
by the Atchison
Art Association.
Live musical performances take place throughout
the year, organized by the Atchison Musical Arts Society. Three
times a year, professional, classically-oriented musicians,
dancers or singers from around the world perform under the sponsorship
of the Atchison Community Concerts Association.
The Benedictine College/Atchison Community
Orchestra and the Riverbend Concert Choir draw on the talents
of adult and youth musicians and singers from the Atchison,
St. Joseph and Leavenworth areas. Summer Sounds is a free concert
series that showcases local and regional acts every Tuesday
evening in June on the lawn of the Atchison Library.
