to work, live, and raise a family. You can make a difference
by becoming a member of a council or committee.

Welcome new and expanded businesses
with ribbon-cutting or groundbreaking ceremonies.

BEAUTIFICATION
COUNCIL
Mission: To assist and encourage the citizens of Atchison
County to work to improve the appearance of the Atchison area.
Goal: Organize two major clean-up projects during the year.
Strategy: Organize two annual city-wide clean up days and set permanent annual dates. The first will be near Earth Day in April, and the second will be the weekend after Labor Day in September.
Goal: Work with community groups and organizations to enhance or replace Atchison's entrance signs.
Strategy: Replace at least one entrance sign per year with assistance from the masonry class at Northeast Kansas Technical College.
Goal: Educate residents in keeping the community clean and involve citizens in taking pride in their community.
Strategy: Organize an anti-littering campaign in local schools.
Construct a beautification pledge and develop a local media campaign to encourage businesses and individuals to take the pledge.

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT COUNCIL
Mission: To strengthen the economic
base of Atchison County by assisting and encouraging existing
business to expand, attracting new business and residents, and working to improve the infrastructure
system of Atchison County.
Goal: Create a development strategy to assist existing business and attract new business.
Strategy: Implement a Business Retention and Expansion (BRE) program.
Sponsor annual business appreciation event to recognize long-time Atchison County businesses.
Make personal visits to each local industry headquarters within the next three years.
Participate in the Enterprise Facilitation program.
Partner with the Northeast Kansas Coalition for Regional Development (NEKCRED); Kansas City Area Development Council (KCADC) and other state and national organizations.
Develop a business recruitment plan.
Create a work plan to develop shovel-ready lots in the industrial park.
Arrange financing for an additional 76 acres currently under option.
Continue with plans to construct a speculative building.
Research an alternative access route to Highway 59 from Shannon Industrial Park.
Goal: Increase the number of new residents to Atchison.
Strategy: Sponsor annual New Professionals Reception to introduce new management personnel to the community.
Work with the City of Atchison in implementing housing strategies that will attract and retain residents.
Develop a "greeting" committee in promoting Atchison as a great place to live.
Goal: Work to improve the transportation system in Atchison County.
Strategy: Continue to monitor the progress of the Amelia Earhart Bridge replacement plan and maintain contact with those entities involved (HNTB advisory committee, KDOT, MoDOT).
Continue support of the Airport Layout Plan and potential grant funding.
Goal: Build a multi-faceted sports complex in Atchison County.
Strategy: Create a task force plan and build the facility.

LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT COUNCIL
Mission: To foster quality leadership in business, government,
education and service organizations in and around Atchison County.
Goal: Facilitate the Leadership Atchison County (LAC) program.
Strategy: Present an annual six-week session on skills-based training and community awareness to develop new community leaders.
Goal: Provide area youth with leadership opportunities in Atchison County.
Strategy: Work with local businesses and schools to develop a city youth council and serve as a liaison between the city commission and area youth.
Goal: Facilitate the development of an Atchison Community Foundation.
Strategy: Research information on community foundation development.
Goal: Create community awareness of the local electoral process and responsibilities of elected officials.
Strategy: Host an annual community leadership workshop to provide information to those who may be interested in running for an elected office, those helping with a campaign, and those interested in the political process.
Encourage a local group to host an official candidate forum during election years.
Goal: Incorporate alumni into LAC.
Strategy: Hold at least one alumni event per year.
Engage alumni in further developing facilitation skills through having alumni facilitate LAC each year.
Construct a master facilitator certificate to award alumni once they have facilitated.

TOURISM development COUNCIL
Mission: To develop and promote tourism in Atchison County by attracting out-of-town visitors and creating maximum economic impact.
Goal: To increase visitor traffic to Atchison and bolster sales and bed tax revenues for the benefit of the city's and county's economic base and the quality of life for our citizens.
Strategic Goals: Develop new tourism products and enhance existing ones, including special events that focus on Atchison's authentic heritage and afford the opportunity to experience hometown America at its best and most gratifying.
Provide hospitality services that maximize the success of tourism activities to increase the potential for repeat visitors.
Increase awareness of Atchison's unique heritage through trolley tours.
Supplement tourism budget through fundraising activities.
Implement cost-effective marketing to promote the whole of Atchison as a desirable tourist destination with a unique and authentic cultural heritage.
Increase awareness of Atchison through positive and cost-effective publicity.
Improve communications with city and county governments and the public.
Continue to gather data that substantiates economic impact of tourism and helps in strategic marketing and decision-making.

WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT
Mission: To grow and create a workforce responsive to the demands of Atchison County employers.
Goal: Enhance employer management's knowledge and performance by identifying, then connecting to, existing resources.
Strategy: Sponsor quarterly employers' roundtables on current topics to address employer needs.
Respond to the Caplan & Associates workforce development study by addressing Council appropriate recommendations.
Goal: Assist local employers by recognizing, then addressing, their workforce needs.
Strategy: Organize and sponsor annual career fair to introduce area high school students to the career opportunities available in the Atchison County workforce.
Facilitate employability life skills training through a Power Point presentation, encouraging participant interaction, to junior and senior classes at all area high schools.
Employ motivational presenter to enlighten student career vision.
Maintain focus group discussions in the areas of health care, retail, hospitality, manufacturing and other areas if identified, to gather data relevant to local employment trends; identify resources to meet those needs.
Initiate activities to establish a job fair to introduce the general populace to employment opportunities in the Atchison area.
